Consistency and Thoughts

So I said I was coming back in a week or two, and I have not.

Why is this? Why did I promise a blog post without posting a blog?

Because I have neared completion of my second draft! Last year when Draft 1 was written, the first handful of chapters came in spurts. I would get inspired, write, take a breath and get back to it, but consistency only game the further in I got. I've realized now that once you get rolling, once you stop the impulse to take a breath, you just don't stop. I don't, anyway. Every morning, except for usually on Saturdays, I wake up, I take a shower, I make my coffee, and I sit in front of my computer, open the original draft, open the new version, and work on the edits. And I do it until the very last minute when I have to go to work.

And let me tell you, I put everything into my day job, but there's also not a single day that goes by where my mind isn't on this project. Where I'm not thinking about the plot holes needing fixed, or the worldbuilding needing to be inserted, or the future research necessary in later drafts and edits. What started off as a rather slow edit of Book 1 has become an avalanche of edits. I would edit a chapter, take a break, edit a chapter, and take a break. But once I'm inspired, once I'm feeling the momentum? This train keeps chugging.

This also means the blog collects some dust. My bad.

So how much do I have left? Two chapters. Two climactic chapters featuring characters that will find their paths diverging by the end, a grand revelation, and a harrowing finale. After that, I have some worldbuilding edits to put into earlier chapters, and finally, when all that is finished, I am going to seek out friends, family, and fellow writers. Alpha, I'm calling it. I want readers. I know it's the second draft, and the second draft is rather difficult to judge - there's missing pieces still. I know SOME of the shortcomings. I know there's a few chapters that still feel wooden - to me. But I want to see where the opinions of others are.

What works?

What doesn't?

What needs to go away and what needs to stay?

While people alpha read, I'm not stopping my writing. I'll be revisiting my short story regarding the Dragonspawn, Tarva, and her adventures. I'll start a second short story, and yes, even with Book 1 still needing workshopping, further drafts and edits, and more readers, I'll start planning for the future of the series. I won't be idle. I will be consistent.

That includes here! So, this time, I will put out a post talking about some of the fantasy series that have shaped me, molded me, and inspired me, and likely, inspired Dragonsoul.

Until next time, watch the skies, for the dragons are coming.
